This book will open up discourse of art and the environment and its association with the influential history of environmental art in the United States, referencing a more global perspective. Hundreds of current case studies, gleaned from the Prix COAL (Coalition pour l'art et le development durable, Nathalie Blanc being a member of the scientific committee) in France, as well as examples of art practices in other parts of the world will be used to explore the recent developments of art trends globally, especially countries in crisis. This approach of analyzing environmental art work will address three main areas. First, it explores how art develops alternative paths to sustainable development as it is less linked to formal ways of investigating reality. Included in this will be a special section on the so-called "parallel structures" of the former Soviet-bloc countries regarding cultural heritage and collateral. Second, it analyses how artists have been playing an increasing role in civil society as community organizers, activists, witnesses, and local players. Third, it re-contextualizes art forms engaging dialogue with local economies of nature. This includes engaging art in issues of "craftsmanship" that are re-examining the definition of form in a local culture.
